Thunder, lightning and rain greeted members competing for the Fred Naden Memorial Cup at Hampton Springs on Sunday. The club travelled for the first time to this well established commercial fishery near Malpas for the second of this year's championship matches. There could hardly have been a less welcoming start as the rain gave the anglers a good soaking before they'd even reached their pegs! There is a mistaken belief that you only have to turn up at a commercial fishery to be ensured of a good days fishing. The reality, however, is often different as many of those competing on Sunday will testify. Neil Jellis took first place with 37lb 2oz of carp and tench. Pole fished pellet to the edge of a clump of far bank weed provided Jellis with bites throughout the day. Whilst most of the carp were averaging 4 to 8oz a couple of fish in the 4 to 5lb range boosted his weight and by the end of the match the average size being caught was nearer 12oz. Graham Massey fishing one of the wider pegs on the water relied on his tried and tested wand backed up with a few fish caught close in on the pole to weigh in 27lb 8oz. Double caster was the successful bait for a catch that included a number of skimmer bream amongst the carp and tench. Jonathan Smith has had a cracking start to the championship series and followed up his first place in the previous match with a third placed 16lb 8oz. Pole fished red maggot at 16 metres provided the best method of attacking his swim. Colin French was another who found that red maggot was the best bait as he weighed in 14lb 2oz for fourth place
