The match team made up for years of first round away tie defeats by securing victory in the first round of the 2008 Van Den Eynde/Angling Times Supercup. The local team were up against Middlewich based Cheshire Match Group and Macclesfield Waltonians.
On an extremely peggy and out of sorts Trent & Mersey Canal at Hassall Green the home side went through on total weight caught having tied on points with Cheshire Match Group.
Victory was sweet as it avenged last year's narrow defeat against Macclesfield Waltonians on the River Weaver who finished in third place. Star of the day for Congleton was the 2007 Junior Champion Jonathan Smith who won his section and secured second place overall with his weight of 1lb 9oz 8dr from peg 6. Barry Fern & Stefan Brown were the team's other section winners where they became the only two anglers to catch on the Canal Centre stretch of the canal. With both Congleton and Cheshire MG having three dry nets each it was Smith's second placed weight that ensured they went through with a combined weight of 2lb 2oz 9dr compared to Cheshire MG's 1lb 5oz 7dr. Macclesfield Waltonians provided the match winner in Ian Shaw who weighed in a superb 7lb 2oz from peg 7 but their team result was marred by five dry nets.
Special thanks to Malc Booth who deputised at the last moment for his brother Dave.
The second round has yet to be drawn but the match should take place in April or June.
